My first post is pretty much a sample to see if this is working properly.  I have to make a comment about the Mayors stare down with Mr. Becker at the August 4, 2008 council meeting.  I haven't timed it yet, but it had to be two minutes with dead silence in the chambers only broken up by Kevin Holliday breaking the silence advising them that they had a motion on the table.  Who knows how long it would have lasted.  Pretty petty actions by an adult and a leader of our city.  The mayor commented that he was just contemplating wether or not to respond.  His actions responded for him!

Looks great John and it will be fun to converse and learn what is done and should be done via our local elected officials and the staff they appoint and hire.

John, This is a fantastic idea! I hope that All citizens of Willmar will use this as a site to get and share information. Staying informed on the many issues that face the City of Willmar.

Funny thing of it is, I just wanted one of the councilmen to have the guts to bring up the question "are there any rain gardens or detention areas around this road?" but evidently anytime I speak it's going to be confrontational.

daveb who was the council person who first brought up rain gardens and other possible solutions? Sure wasn't Mr. Christianson who seems to want to convince you and your neighbors that he cares. He didn't even see the need to have a special work session of the council to deal with the issue, and he sure didn't bring ANY suggestions to the table. Sure hope you are going to support the re-election of the only Council Person in Ward 2 who has actually attempted to make some suggestions!

anonymous, obviously you support Gardner and we all have our opinions of all the councilmen. My personal belief is that there is allot going on behind the scenes that we know nothing about. That's why I support an independent Task Force assigned this one simple idea, Fix the stormwater issue in Willmar. But the ideas generated from this independent group will go no further unless you have the buyin from staff and council. Mr. Gardner presented a motion to the council and it was passed to have the staff bring ideas to the council to solve the stormwater flooding at 10th and Kandi. Only one of these items is going to be done. When it will be done I have no idea. That is the pond on the north side of town by Trott Ave railroad crossing. Many of the other ideas are fantastic ideas, namely doubling the pipe under Hodapp Field among others. But there is no leader on the council to come forward and bring an item to the table. Where have all the leaders gone? Other than Barr engineering reports and studies nothing has been done.

daveb I do think that Mr. Gardner has done more positive than people are giving him credit for. I have tried to stay abreast of what is happening with this and continue to be amazed at the lack of any ideas coming from those who have been on the council for far longer. What happened to the rain garden idea? Perhaps if it comes from Mr. Christianson it will get heard, because he certainly is not supporting it at all since it came from Gardner.

The 'Rain Garden' idea came from me (Ron Christianson). If you check back on our meetings you will see that I suggested that the city buy Jorgenson's and make a large Rain Garden/Detention Pond. My idea was shot down by our city attorney, administrator, and mayor.
Now we are in a law suit with the Jorgenson's.
I have studied rain gardens and attempted to impliment them around Green Lake on two projects we built, but the county doesn't recongnize them in any policy that they have for impermeable surface.
Rain Gardens are used all around Lake Minnetonka due to the size of the homes and the surface area they cover.
I think everyone in flood areas should have a rain garden - they are easily constructed and don't cost that much.
Enough for now.
Sorry I got on this blog so late.

Maybe "Ron" should check the record before he speaks he would find that he is wrong again. He was not the first councilmember to bring up rain gardens.
